Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your recipes live on your phone.

What does the free version include?

Your whole shelf, forever. Typing recipes in is unlimited, and so is everything that comes after — searching your shelf, ingredient lookup and real macros, scaling a recipe up or down, sharing, and exporting. You also get one photo read every day, free.

What does a subscription add?

Unlimited photo reads, online recipe search, reading a recipe from a pasted link, AI macro estimates for ingredients the databases do not know — and no adverts.

Why is there a limit on photo reads?

Reading a photograph uses AI, which costs real money per image. One a day is what can be given away without the app needing to charge everyone.

Will I lose my recipes if I change phone?

Yes, unless you export them first. Because there is no account, nothing is stored anywhere but your device. Open You → Your recipes → Export my tin and keep the file somewhere safe. On the new phone, use Import a tin. Importing merges rather than replaces — where the same recipe exists on both sides, the newer edit wins.

Can I keep recipes in more than one language?

Yes, and that is rather the point. A recipe stays in whatever language it arrived in. You can choose the language it is saved in when you photograph or paste it, and the language it goes out in when you share it — so a recipe sent to you in one language can land on your shelf in another.

Quantities, units and the credit line are never translated.

The app says it cannot read my photo.

Photographs are read best when the recipe fills the frame, the page is flat, and the light is even. Handwriting is harder than print, and anything the reader was unsure of is flagged for you to correct rather than guessed at silently. If a photo will not read, you can always type the recipe in — that is free and unlimited.

Macros are missing for one ingredient.

Ingredients are matched against the USDA and Open Food Facts databases, which do not know everything — regional items and spice blends are often missing. The total is then marked partial and says how many ingredients were left out, rather than quietly showing a number that is wrong. You can rename the ingredient to something the database knows, or use the AI estimate, which is part of the subscription.

Why can I not save a PDF on my phone?

Sharing a recipe as a PDF currently works in a web browser but not in the installed app. On a phone the share falls back to plain text, which carries the same recipe. This is a known limitation and is being worked on.

How do I cancel a subscription?

On iOS: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android: Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. Cancelling stops future renewals; your recipes stay exactly where they are, because they never depended on the subscription.

How do I get rid of the adverts?

Subscribe. There are no adverts anywhere in the paid version, and none on the recipe or capture screens in either version.

Deleting your data

Uninstall Recipe Tin. That is the whole procedure, and it is immediate.

Everything the app holds — your recipes, the original photographs, your name and picture, your settings and your language — is stored on your device and nowhere else. Removing the app removes all of it.

There is nothing to request from us, because we hold nothing to delete. Recipe Tin has no account, no sign-in, and no copy of your recipes on any server. Photographs you send to be read pass through our server to the reading service and are not stored at either end.

If you subscribe, your subscription is held by Google Play rather than by us. Cancel or manage it in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. Cancelling does not touch your recipes; they stay on your device either way.
