Recipe Tin keeps your recipes in one place. There is no account and no sign-in. This page explains exactly what leaves your device and what does not.
Recipe Tin has no sign-up, no login, and no user profile on any server. We do not know who you are, we cannot see your recipes, and we have no way to send you an email. The name and picture you can set in the app are stored only on your phone and are used only to sign a recipe you choose to share.
Your shelf — every recipe you save, its ingredients, its method, your tags, the photos you attach, and the original photograph of any card you captured — is stored only on this device. It is never uploaded, never synced, and never visible to us. The same is true of your profile picture, your language, colour and typeface choices.
Deleting the app deletes all of it, permanently, with no copy anywhere else. Because of that, your recipes cannot be recovered if you change or reset your phone — which is why the app has an Export feature. An export is a file you create and control; it is not sent to us.
Photographs of recipes. When you photograph a recipe card, cookbook page or screenshot, that image is sent to our server and processed by Anthropic's Claude AI to read the recipe out of it. The image is used only to answer that request. It is not used to train any model. Your profile picture is never sent — it is written to your phone's storage and stays there. Same camera, entirely different path.
Recipe text, when you ask for a translation. If you choose to import a recipe in another language, or to share one in another language, the recipe's text is sent to our server and translated by Claude. If you do not use those features, no recipe text is ever sent.
Web addresses you paste. If you paste a link to a recipe page, the address is sent to our server, which fetches that page and extracts the recipe from it.
Search terms. If you use the online recipe search, your search text and filters are sent to our server and processed by Claude.
Ingredient names, for nutrition lookup. Ingredient names are sent to our server, which queries the USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts databases. These are public food databases; the request contains the ingredient name only and nothing that identifies you.
An anonymous app identifier. Every request carries a random identifier so we can enforce the daily free allowance and prevent abuse. It is generated on your device, is not linked to your name, email, phone number or device identifier, and cannot be used to identify you.
The free version of Recipe Tin shows a banner advertisement supplied by Google AdMob. To do this, Google may access your device's advertising identifier and use it to select adverts. Google's handling of that data is governed by its own policy, at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
On iOS you will be asked once whether Recipe Tin may track you across other apps and websites. Declining is completely fine — the app behaves identically either way, and you will simply see less relevant adverts.
A subscription removes all advertising, and with it the advertising identifier is no longer requested.
Subscriptions are handled by RevenueCat on top of the App Store or Google Play. Payment is taken by Apple or Google — we never see your card details. RevenueCat receives the same anonymous identifier described above, plus the purchase receipt supplied by the store, so the app can tell whether your subscription is active.
| Who | What they receive | When |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | Recipe photographs, recipe text for translation, search terms, pasted page text | Only when you use a feature that reads or writes text with AI |
| USDA FoodData Central | Ingredient names | When macros are looked up |
| Open Food Facts | Barcode numbers | When you scan a barcode |
| Google AdMob | Advertising identifier | Free version only |
| RevenueCat, Apple, Google | Anonymous identifier and purchase receipt | Only if you subscribe |
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with anyone not listed above. There is no analytics SDK in this app.
Recipe photographs and text are processed to answer your request and are not stored on our server afterwards. Our server keeps a temporary cache of nutrition lookups (for example, the macros for "red lentils") so the same ingredient is not fetched repeatedly — this contains food data only, never anything from your recipes and nothing identifying you. Daily usage counts are kept only long enough to enforce the allowance and reset every day.
Recipe Tin is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Since the app has no account and collects no personal information from anyone, there is nothing to delete on request.
Because everything personal lives on your phone, you are in direct control of it:
If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your device, the effective date above will change and the updated policy will be published here before the change reaches the app.
